Can the red LED in the rear view mirror (clown nose) be connected to the smartTOP or is the remoteKEY really necessary?

Question:

There is a remoteKEY module for BMW which can be connected to the red LED in the mirror to simulated an armed alarm (if the factory alarm is absent). Can the LED also be driven by the smartTOP module, so I don't need to install both modules just to get this one extra feature?

Answer:

We have been asked exactly this question many times before. Unfortunately the short answer is that it's not feasible to do that from the smarttop module due to the install location. You would have to run wires clean across the entire car and no one would do that. The remotekey module which we originally developed for the sedan and coupe only is installed under the glove box from there it's still pretty complicated and annoying to run the wire up to the mirror but it is possible.  We did make sure both modules work perfectly fine when installed in the same car (most of the RK features do need to be disabled though as they are in the ST already) and we do give a discount when buying both or adding the remoteKEY to an already installed SmartTOP.
