LED does not blink or top does not operate after installing STLFBW3 or STLFBW4 with plug and play harness (mainly Z4)
Problem:
After installing everything the module does not seem to operate or the LED will not blink, instead it lights up permanently or not at all.
Solution:
The big black plug that needs to be disconnected from the top control unit and replaced with ours and our identical plug that needs to be inserted into the top control unit might not get proper contact if not inserted right. When inserting and connecting the plug(s), make sure you press hard on the plug itself and do not rely on the locking lever to pull the plug into the socket! Push down on the plug until the locking lever comes up and latches all by itself. Especially for the connection between the harness plug and the top control unit make sure the plug is pushed into the socket very well.
If the green LED will still not blink, disconnect everything and check the contact pins in the socket of the top control unit for bent pins. Reconnect everything to stock and double check that the top is working, then attempt the install again, making sure that all plugs are inserted and pushed in firmly.
RESPONSE FROM ONE OF OUR CUSTOMERS WHO EXACTLY PINPOINTED THE PROBLEM:
I do know what the problem is. It happens with the stock plug as well as the plug you ship with your module. When you insert the plug, you may hear 2 clicks. The first click is the pull bracket clicking into place. The second click is a mechanism along the side of the socket clicking into place. If you use sufficient force when pushing down the plug, then both of these things will happen at the same time, Otherwise, you may have to push down on the socket with some force to get the second click. It a little awkward in there, so you may not get the right amount of force on the first push all the time.
If the second locking mechanism is not properly in place, then there is a plastic piece on the side of the socket that will appear slightly bowed out. This means that your top will not work, but there will be a green led on the module, so at first glance, it looks like things are good. However, once you start hitting buttons on the remote, you will see the error led light up, and the convertible top will not be functional (door locks work though).
PLEASE SEE THE FOLLOWING PHOTO WITH THE SECOND LOCKING MECHANISM MARKED IN RED:
If the above does not help, here is another trick you can try:
Remove the cap from the large connector on our module harness. The connector which plugs into the factory top module. Just take the inside part of the connector and push that into the socket, make sure you carefully align it and then press it in all the way. It sits really tight and will not slide out. We have had quite a few positive reports after doing this. Even though we use the ORIGINAL OEM plug, it is still a total mystery why sometimes even the original connector will not work once it has been removed from the top controller once! Without the cap it can go in deeper and we suspect there is a gap/tolerance issue that on some cars results in bad contacts if the cap is installed.
