All Plug-and-Play Modules: Connection Issues I (or top won't work after removal). Damage to Top Controller
The most common source of problems is a result of improper installation. While it is technically impossible for the smartTOP to cause any damage to any of the factory control units in the car, it is possible that during installation of any of the plugs one of the contact pins in the connector sockets was bent or pushed in. If the top won't work after installing a SmartTOP with a plug-and-play wiring harness or a SmartTOP for 996 or 997 plug-in-between module, double check all connector sockets for the following problems. Ths also applies, if the top will not work even after reverting everything to factory condition!
IMPORTANT: If there are no bent or pushed in pins and the top won't work, it is best to first revert everything to stock condition and test the top. If the top is still nonfunctional with everything in factory condition, DISCONNECT THE CAR BATTERY for 5 minutes to reset the entire system. This has helped in many cases where the factory top control unit simply crashed or locked up due to some implausible condition or switch signal.
Possible ways to fix:
Either pull the pin back out with needle-nose pliers or - better - take the control box apart. It is only held together by plastic tabs on the sides which can be pushed back with the fingernails. Take the bottom off and remove the main printed circuit board from the housing. You will immediately see the "troublemaker" as in the picture to the left. Push it back into place with a screw driver or pocket knife. Additionally you may want to use hotmelt adhesive or other type of glue to prevent this from happening in the future.
